2012 Big Event! Lands End to Lizard walk

Following the success of last years walk “Scilly on the Edge” around the entirety of The Isles of Scilly coastal paths, a total 33 miles accomplished in only 12 hours and 25 minutes.

This year we have decided to up the stakes and go for a longer even more challenging event.

The basis will be similar with a team of up to 12 islanders will travel to the mainland in mid May to attempt to walk from Lands End to the Lizard.

This is a whole different ball game as last years walk around the islands was tough logistically to achieve all 5 inhabited islands in a day and  the terrain here on Scillys’ edge is clearly not as high as the West Cornwall cliff walks around Lands End and all along the Lizard Peninsular.

Our highest headlands here on Scilly being in the region of 100 feet and many of Lands End and the Lizards being more like 300 feet.

This years walk is a total of 44 miles, but the real challenge is the elevation gain with all those headlands to climb the total ascent of this years walk is an eye watering  7850 feet! That’s 2393 metres for those of you that prefer your measurements in metric .

Because of the extra distance and extra overall height to climb we are planning to break the walk up over 2 days.

The planned date for the 2012 walk is Saturday 19th May and Sunday 20th May.

At this early stage planning is still ongoing but it is currently thought that is wise to stop walking on day one around the Perranuthnoe or maybe Porthleven area, eat well and sleep well to start early the next day and complete the walk.

Having accomplished last years walk in a better time than expected this year should be a challenging but very enjoyable weekend, taking in some of Cornwall’s most beautiful scenery it will be a walk to remember and hopefully will be the start of a “chain” of walks that could take in the entire South West coastal footpath that is some 630 miles  from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset.

We intend to build on the success of last years charity fundraising as well, last years charity was Parkinsons Disease and we raised in the region of £5000 a great effort!

This years charity is yet to be decided at this early stage but we will post more information here after our first meeting of interested walkers.

More information will be posted on this website about this years walk following our first meeting to discuss planning the weekend.

I shall also add pictures from last years walk in future posts.
